| subject: | Re: [writing2] My Experience With POD |
I've heard much worse tales about Llewellyn -- . It's getting tougher & tougher now matter what way you go, isn't it? Atill, I'm anticipating the release of "A Rose in Time" around X-mas. Review copy will soon be available if anyone here would lik >Here's my experience with "The President's Astrologer", which was not so great either. After a couple of years of unsuccessfully trying to get an agent, I was lucky enough to find a publisher on my own, Llewellyn, and it only took about six months to proceed from readers to acceptance. I will say the few heady months between acceptance and actually holding the book in my hands were unbelievably exciting. Then reality set in. > >The first printing was 5,000 copies. The publisher budgeted $10,000 for promotion, a lot of which was squandered on a poorly conceived, unsuccessful weekend in Washington DC to introduce the book. I was against this, pushing for New York City where the only expenses would have been a few cabfares. The rest of the budget went for ten days of booksignings in Florida, promotional postcards, etc. The book was one of three finalists for the PMA's Benjamin Franklin award for fiction, something that thrilled me but was totally ignored by Llewellyn for promotional purposes. > >The final outcome: Llewellyn gave it one year--then analyzed the sales. There were only 3,000 copies sold, which to me sounded wonderful, but to the publisher was the kiss of death. They decided not to go into a second printing, and a couple of months later, remaindered their entire stock. > >Practical results: I had a lifetime's ambition realized and my bio is now in Contemporary Authors, Vol.178. I got all the rights back to "The President's Astrologer"--for a few glorious months, there was interest shown by a television producer and I thought I'd have the last laugh on Llewellyn. but it came to naught. I now have an agent, but so far he's had no luck selling the two other novels I've written since. > >Barbara --- Rachel's Little NET2FIDO Gate v 0.9.9.8 Alpha* Origin: Rachel's Experimental Echo Gate (1:135/907.17) SEEN-BY: 24/903 120/544 123/500 135/907 461/640 633/260 262 267 270 285 SEEN-BY: 774/605 2432/200 @PATH: 135/907 123/500 774/605 633/260 285 |
