Todays techie/hobbyist market is tomorrows main stream market..
I started downloading television series off the internet over 2 years ago
and today it's already become so popular that it's clearly headed to become
mainstream (I regularly max out my 6mb line downloading because so many
people are sharing). Nobody realizes the size of it though because folks
had to go underground to avoid the RIAA/MPAA shutting down their networks.
Today the market is hundreds of private groups of 2-5000 or so linked
together mostly in bittorrent networks with private membership web forums
providing the links.
I can prove it too. Look at the numbers for television markets, they have
significantly declined.
Good shows that non-newbie computer users watch have fallen off the charts
because this market segment has already switched. It's the reason shows
like survivor and desperate housewives lead the ratings and the most
pirated shows are falling behind in ratings.
Call up some of your old friends and ask them to look at their rating
numbers in this light and see if it doesn't prove true.
Tivo is on the way out because it's too restrictive in that you can't do
archiving, editing, or sharing, and this is what Jobs was aiming at. But
the heavy users have already moved (it's like how DSL was adopted). For
this to go completely mainstream the only thing required is for the
hardware world to realize the demand for players like the
linktheater/terastation is there and waiting.
BTW I found out why buffalo is dropping the PAL version of the linktheater,
they are concentrating on taking the tivo market. Cisco is headed the same
way with the KISS players and RCA is working on this as well. Won't be
long.
