subject: Web host recommendations

From: RobertB

I am again thinking of getting my (small) Web site up (once I build it).
There are lots and lots of inexpensive hosting services available,
scattered around the country.

Does anyone have recommendations? I don't want to use a free service.

- Does it matter if they are local or not?

- I could use my ISP for hosting, but they cost more than the discount
places. My ISP charges $25/month for basic services, which would be enough
for my needs, but there are cheaper alternatives. However, I would get
support and a live person.

- How important is support? I'm not going to be running any java or
scripting on the site. It will be pretty static, just mostly a way for
people to contact me, put up a CV, stuff like that.

- Do they all allow you to FTP files and create subdirectories, change
permissions on those directories, etc.? It seems some try to
"simplify" life by providing a Web interface and site builder.

- Is there anything other than price that I need to consider? I'd prefer
to use a host that does not get regularly blacklisted.
