From: "Geo."
Simple, the money is there, they just have to figure out a way to get it.
Right now you have the show authors/actors, then you have a media company
who sponsors them, then you have a network who broadcasts the shows. All
these people need to make money not unlike a manufacturer, distributor,
store outlet setup.
The web allows you to cut out the middleman, it works, we've seen this with
lots of retail prices being cut to ribbons by sell direct websites. No
store overhead to pay. In fact in broadcast models it allows the authors
to deal directly with advertisers and cut out everyone else. No
broadcasting costs, no time constraints, no control by the FCC about what
you can and can't put in the show, it'll be very attractive once someone
with some balls takes that first plunge.
So you can make a show, embed commercials or product placement and get the
money for the show directly (of course it has to be up front so advertisers
have to be willing to take a chance at first as well). If it's archived on
a file share network, product placement and such is archived with it. It's
eternal advertising, the more people want to watch it the more the
advertising is worth.
It cuts out the control by a network who may at any time change your night,
timeslot, pull the plug on your show (like say firefly, enterprise,
farscape, lexx, or any of a thousand other shows that were growing in
popularity when they were terminated by network execs in favor of american
idol or desperate housewives) it really represents freedom for the
creators..
The problem right now is every time someone sets up a website or fileshare
network where you can find what's available, the MPAA or RIAA shuts them
down. Not because it's piracy but because they can't afford to have the net
emerge as a distribution channel where the control is not in the hands of
the media giants like it is now. But with the current darknet, they have
already lost that battle so now it's just a matter of time till someone
with some money to gamble decides to give this new model a try.
