Quinn, from someone who is normally so confident in oneself as you are, 
your previous post was something of a surprise and only shows that there 
is, indeed, a bit of the vulnerable portion of humanity in you :-)

However, the question you asked is valid, whether from a writer, 
teacher, businessman or even housewife.  We all have moments in our 
lives in which a cruel word, deliberate or accidental, cuts us to the quick.

I know this may sound trite, but one of the best ways to rise above it 
is in forgiveness of the perpetrator - either directly or in some sort 
of stylized personal ceremony.  Forgiveness does not mean forgetfulness, 
although that frequently occurs too.  Forgiveness doesn't mean an 
attitude of superiority over another.  But true forgiveness comes from 
the realization that what's done is done and that I refuse to let the 
transgressor own a piece of me through their previous actions.  As long 
as I harbor bad feelings about it, they *own* that part of me.  As soon 
as I let go, they no longer have anything on which to hang.

Of course, that doesn't prevent it from happening again; but at that 
point I usually whack 'em with a two-by-four and then it is their turn 
to practice forgiveness ;-)
