Now I am not a programmer, but I figure if you can fix the make files, you 
should be most of the way there, and there are a lot of compilers to choose 
from, tho I recon DJGPP or Open Watcom are you best bets.

Compiles fine on my Linux boxes (Debian), not on FreeBSD or Windows yet, tho 
on Windows, I am still trying to figure out how to get the code to compile, 
it is shall we say a little different from the Linux "way" I am accustomed 
to.
