Yes, MKV is just a container, the contents can be DIVX or XVID or any of
the other codecs. I have not seen sound out of sync with an MKV file yet.
MKV has a lot of advantages over other containers. For example it can
contain multiple audio or subtitle streams with the video. It has faster
seek times, it can go over 4gb file sizes (I don't recall which other
formats are limited below that). It really is a great file type for high
def video.
The problem with MKV is that I haven't found a network DVD player that can
play them yet. So I'm forced to convert to something I can play. The
conversion can be difficult because the format you convert to can't hold
all the stuff the MKV contains.
