Hi Eric,

Since first becoming personally aquainted (well over a decade ago, perhaps 3 
decades ago) with life-threatening chronic illnesses and recovery and 
survival, and other effects of aging and life which I share with the rest of 
humanity:) the one thing that seems to make the most difference is getting 
enough "good sleep". At certain points the hallucinations from sleep 
deprivation can become quite spectacular, self-medicating can help somewhat, 
but what really helps the most is to turn-off the rest of the world somehow 
and truly relax, as in zen not beer.

Some combination thereof is of course sometimes required so thankfully like 
many veterans of the summer of love, I made the move from sativa to indica 
for those nights when induced exhaustion and freedom from pain can result in 
good sleep (and also for tantric qualities which should never be discounted 
when looking for deep sleep afterwards:) The danger here of course is that 
one hopes that good sleep will become habit forming with practice. Otherwise 
any medication will become habit forming or as useless as melatonin on its 
own.
