In Jay trek, the computers are still 100 times to slow to handle the data
necessary to store a pattern. What happens is that the energy beam its
modulated to contain it's own pattern for reconstruction. damage that and
you loose the whole shooting match.
It's a real time process, although they can put the beam on hold for up to an hour.
Essentially imagine a radio broadcast with no recording. They used to do
this all the time. The radio signal carries the content, so does the
transporter beam, as well as the enrgy potential of the person being
transported.
