Replying to a message of Mimi Gallandt to Bob Ackley: RW>>> On the day after the Nagasaki bomb, August 10, 1945 the Japanese RW>>> offered to surrender. This was thru the Swiss government, who RW>>> informed the US government. The Japanese also agreed to the RW>>> surrender as posed in the Potsdam agreement in the same message. RW>>> Apparently already aprised of the contents by the Swiss. RW>>> You can read a copy of it here. RW>>> http://www.ibiblio.org/pha/policy/1945/450810a.html BA>> I don't do Internet and in any case I don't dispute that the Japanese BA>> offered unconditional surrender after the Nagasaki blast. What I BA>> said was that the Japanese wanted to open surrender negotiations a BA>> couple of months *before* the Hiroshima bomb was dropped, and that BA>> Stalin chose not to pass the message along to his allies. MG> I'm highly suspect of whatever resource you got that factoid from. That *fact* came from David Kahn's book 'The Codebreakers,' published in 1966 with a second edition published in the 1990s. I have both editions. Mr. Kahn is an acknowledged authority on code breaking - the book goes back centuries and works right up to the 1960s - and on US efforts in that regard. --- FleetStreet 1.19+* Origin: Bob's Boneyard, Emerson, Iowa (1:300/3) SEEN-BY: 10/1 3 18/200 34/999 120/228 123/500 128/2 140/1 226/0 236/150 SEEN-BY: 249/303 250/306 261/20 38 100 1381 1404 1406 1410 1418 266/1413 SEEN-BY: 280/1027 633/260 267 712/848 800/432 2222/700 2320/100 105 200 2905/0 @PATH: 300/3 14/5 140/1 261/38 633/260 267 |
