I doubt I can top Michael's little story inspired by this picture, but here=
 goes...

AlienWorld2

Captain Tron Chiang of the Odonan starship Al Rashid approached his first o= fficer.
"Is this where the body was found?" he asked.

His Idobian first officer, Churl Remlor, answered softly, "Yes. As
far as = we can
tell, he was the last one, the last one of his kind."

Remlor did not look at Chiang as she spoke, and the captain understood why.=
  Unlike
most, Remlor could understand what it was like to be the last of a kind. S= he was
the last of the Idobians. She looked out over the mountainous landscape, t= he
looming planet, the rushing wind and the tides that had surged so much and
destroyed so much of what this world once was.

The first officer continued, "It's strange in a sense. Look at this,
the s= ight of that
world approaching this one, the sun setting and all. It's very beautiful
i= n a way."

"The Persopians never had a chance," Chiang remarked.
"Their science was n= ever
advanced enough to allow them to leave the planet, but their astronomy was
advanced enough to tell them that on this day, this world and that world
up=
 there
will collide."

"And as a result, this society just kind of faded away. There was no
war, = no destruction,
no final days of looting and debauchery. Instead, they just stopped having=
 children,
stopped advancing, stopped building. Their numbers fell. Then, the last
o= f the kind
came here. I wonder why here."

"Maybe because this is the highest land on this continent. The tides would=
 come here
last," Chiang explained.

"No," Remlor continued. "It's more than that. This
location must hold som= ething
special. He could have gone to many places, but he choose to come here. I=
 wonder
if he had any hope of surviving until this moment, so that his end would be=
 his
world's end."

"I don't know. He was very old. Apparently, he had been alone for
some ti= me."

"And avoided going mad?"

"He might have prepared for being alone."

"How?" Remlor asked. "How could anybody prepare for that?"

Chiang thought about that for a few seconds, and answered, "When you
have n= o choice,
you do what you must."

The moment had been bright. The sun was setting, casting its golden and
or= ange rays
across the mountains and the waves down below. The wind still blew, teasin= g their
hair. She could almost feel the planet groan under the gravitational influ= ence of
the other world.

"Sunset," she said. It actually came a little earlier than it
should, as t= he approaching
world slid across the sun. Darkness fell rapidly.

Chiang added, "And this world will never see another sunrise."
