| subject: | Using max with win2k telnet |
Hi,
My bbs is using Max 3.1 DOS running on Win 2k pro. COM/IP is the
telnet server/virtual modem. I'm using the DOS version because when I use
the win32 version it outputs the wrong COM port number to dropfiles for
some stupid reason and therefore my doors don't work. Any suggestions?
That's not the point of this message though. When I use terminal programs
such as mTelnet, Hyper Terminal, even linux telnet.. there are no problems.
However when people use the telnet program that comes with win2k and
possibly XP, weird things happen. For example, whenever a user selects a
new file or message area, it's supposed to go back to the menu (file or
message). What happens is the user and local side both show a blank screen.
If the user hits enter, nothing happens. If they press one of the keys like
B, ?, Q or whatever is configured for that menu then it works fine.. it
just doesn't show the menu. BTW I'm using Star Area lightbar area selector.
SOme might blame it on that, but the weird thing is that it works fine if
you use a different terminal to log in.
I've also seen this behaviour when my menu mecca files had a little looping
script which would update the time until the user pressed a key. This would
show the seconds ticking until a key was pressed. It was neat but when
people using win2k telnet would come in they would never see the menu when
they got to it, unless they pressed enter and the screen redrew. Didn't
happen with other terminals.
I notice that sometimes I see ANSI codes on my screen where there shouldn't
be using win2k telnet because it didn't render properly. I figure there is
something wrong with w2k telnet BUT that should have nothing to do with
Maximus's local display. Why the f*** does the local display act different
too? (blank screen)
the bbs can be telnetted into at bbs.doghousebbs.com if you want to see
for yourself.
Something else I wanted to mention, back when my BBS ran on dialup users
could freeze Maximus by pressing CTRL-S at any menu. Doesn't seem to happen
now that I'm using COM/IP virtual modem.
One last thing. I'm not using the Linux version of maximus just yet because
last time I tried it (August) it wasn't solid like the 3.1 DOS version. So
I'm running 4 nodes of Max 3.1 DOS on windows 2000. DOS so that I can run
door games properly. When there are multiple nodes playing door games
sometimes it CRAWLS, like 2400 bps feeling or slower. This happens when 2
nodes are playing doors and a 3rd node connects in. I know this isn't
Maximus's fault, I'm wondering if someone can give me some suggestions to
make Windows give priority to all open DOS windows. Whichever window has
focus seems to get highest priority. I looked for settings for the shortcut
created for the batch file, but saw nothing about priority or CPU usage.
Thanks,
Ryan
