1) Pattern scanned

2) Body disassembled

3) Signal with pattern sent to new location

4) Body reassembled

If the body at the first location (say on a ship) isn't disassembled, and
the signal still sent to the new location (on a planet), the
"person" on the planet is a copy of the one who remains on the
ship.

Yeah, I know technically the claim is they send a "matter stream"
which is supposed to be the object after being converted to what they call
phased or "dematerialized" matter. However, in other places this
is refered to as energy. Whatever it is, it ain't you, me, a dog, a cat,
or a cow. It's a signal with information to reconstruct the object or
person at another location. The point is, the original is gone and in its
place a copy exists.

In one episode I believe they compared it to the replicators, but said the
transporter was more accurate. In the Trek Encyclopedia---

replicator: Device that uses *transporter* technology to dematerialize a
quantity of matter and rematerialize it in another form, often used to
produce food.

An interesting example of this was in the TNG episode "Second
Chances" when two transporter locks were done on Riker--- one signal
went back to the Potemkin, the other signal bounced off the atmosphere and
remained behind, later to be known as Thomas Riker--- the Xerox.

All of it seems a bit spooky to me. :)
