Well, the Shire is north and west of Fangorn Forest, which was
why Treebeard was taking them west to begin with. Personally, I
think they (Merry & Pippin) just wanted to head toward their
friends and help with the fight, even if the Ents weren't going
to. I don't think they knew about the Isengard destruction of
trees; after all, they hadn't been there yet.
