Actually, the A is not in TOS.  The original NCC-1701 is in TOS and the first 
three movies.  NCC-1701-A is in movies 4-6.  NCC-1701-B is in Generations, 
NCC-1701-C is in the TNG episode Yesterday's Enterprise, and NCC-1701-D and 
-E are as you stated.
