In #1, yeah, but their characters are maturing quite well.
Their brand of black humored comic relief isn't as, well, lathered on as
poor Gimli.... But maybe that's because they don't have so much STUFF on
'em so the facial closeups of glittering eyes and grim lips plays better.
I do feel their casting is 2nd only to the guy playing Sam, who is
spot-spot on.

Sure, sure, the dwarf tossing jokes are good, but I have been having an
argument with somebody about the motive of Merry and Pippin in taking
Treebeard south. My friend said they simply wanted to get closer to their
home. I say they were deliberately wanting to show Treebeard the devastation
caused by Isengard to trees. What do the rest of you say? Which hypothesis
is supported by story elements?
