Is file transfers using a modem working now?  The problem is probably in
the RS-232 setup.  Probably wasn't passing bytes 8 bit clean, or was
interpreting some of the conrol characters.  [Could be hardware hand shake
issues, software hand shake issues, parity issues, etc.]
