Ah, but you're not writing for the chemist so much as you are writing
for the layman.  If you come to a passage dealing with technical
material, assume the layman you are writing for is more familiar with
it than you are and present it at your level of understanding instead
of making it simpler.  If, for instance, you find an occasion to
explain something in the field of stoichiometry, call it that instead
of just chemistry.  It's even enough to explain in dialogue.

"Yes, my specialty is stoichiometry"

"Stow-icky-om-uh-try?  What's that?  The icky part of chemistry?"

He laughed, then explain, "No, it's . . . "
