That null character is indeed a quite possible cause! Now you mention it I 
remember having _exactly_ this problem some time ago!
Don, if you read this -- and I think you are likely to -- use a utility like 
LIST in hex mode to find a null in the problem files. With LIST you should 
look for: space 00 space
It may actually be possible to use ED.exe to do this ...
