Subject: Re: [drakelist] TR-4 Status
Ken -
There are some inconsistencies in your description.
The early TR-4's had the "soupcan" filter, same as used in the
TR-3. The "can"
is a rectangular folded tin, 1.5 x 1.5 x 2" long. But this filter has the
switch _inside_ the can along with eight crystals. There are two wires coming
out of the can to control the lamps indicating sideband, and two 2 conductor
shielded lead for input and output. Later units used two rectangular filters
similar to the ones used in the T-4 series (but at 9 MHz vs 5.645 MHz CF)
mounted to a vertical bracket behind the switch which was mounted to the front
panel.
So if the switch is mounted in the front panel, you probably need the filters
such as those made by Inrad or from a junked later model TR-4. Unless the
previous owner removed the switch from the can.
The manual photo you are looking at is probably the later unit, with the two
filters mounted vertically _through_ the rectangular hole in the chassis where
the soupcan was. If you look at a photo of the bottom of a TR-3, you'll see the
soupcan version.
