Some are, but I don't think this happens automatically. I'm
not sure exactly how messages are gated. The only echo I know of that
is gated has the Internet side in the form of a mailing list. I'm
assuming that someone has a script on a machine somewhere that's on
both that reads in the Fido messages and adds them into a mailing list
and then sends them out to subscribers. Responses from that end are
probably posted back through the same machine.
BG> Another option is moving entireky to an Internet newsgroup,

I'm for either one as I'm probably not going to renew my BBS
membership (at least not full time) when it comes back around in
February. It's just not worth it considering the sad state of Fido.
One could certainly create a new Internet newsgroup, but I'm not sure
this is such a good idea. I think it might just snowball into another
rec.audio.opinion if it's unmoderated (bad news), and I'm not sure
traffic couldn't be absorbed into rec.audio.high-end if it were to go
the moderated approach.
I think a 2nd moderated Usenet group could be a good thing,
actually, since many are afraid to speak out on rec.audio.high-end
because of all the industry professionals and engineers on there that
have a somewhat low tolerance for opinions stated as facts and the bad
rep many on rec.audio.opinion give it. OTOH, rec.audio.opinion is
just a madhouse of bickering and cat fights with the "green pen
society" on one side and the "Scientific proofneeders" on the other.
A more laid back group like rec.audio.opinion that is MODERATED, could
be useful indeed, but know now that the requirements of a moderated
group means much more work for the moderator.
In the case of rec.audio.high-end, a group of moderators must
approve every message before they appear. This causes a delay, not
entirely unlike Fido Lag, although usually no more than 24 hours and
often much less, but it's what keeps out the outright flaming that
appears elsewhere on the Internet. If a new moderated audio newsgroup
were to be created, the moderator (I'm assuming you're volunteering
for this job), would have to approve all the messages every day.
Failing to do so would really deadlock the newsgroup. You could try
to assemble a moderating group, but this may not be easy at first
either. However, traffic might be low enough at first to give you
time to do this.
If we go unmoderated, we'd either have to be specific enough
not to duplicate rec.audio.opinion and rec.audio.misc OR we might
eitherr get little or no traffic or just end up getting crossposts
from those two newsgroups (rec.audio.misc already gets mostly juts
crossposts from rec.audio.opinion).
