Hello All!
The company I'm currently doing some work for is soon going to be moving into
the second floor of their building (expanding from just the first floor). I
have offered to install some networking there, before they actually move in.
Currently, they have a 10BaseT network downstairs, using 2 HP 16-port hubs,
and 2 patch panels.
The plan is to have either Linux or NT (preferably Linux from my POV) acting
as a router between upstairs and downstairs. This means that we can have a
100Mb card in the machine, and have the upstairs network on 100Mb instead of
10Mb - seeing as cards are cheap (only about œ20 now!) we might as well do
this.
The question I'm really asking is - please can I have practical tips on
installing cabling!! :-)
I am familiar with the concept of "flood wiring", and fully intend on wiring
in as many cables as possible (if not sockets as well) before the joiners,
decorators etc. come along.
Are there any special considerations I should have as to where the cable
goes?? I know that you should not bend the cable sharply, or probably run it
parallel to power cables, but are there any lesser-known caveats I should
watch out for?
Are there any types of wall-mounted socket that I should buy, or avoid
buying? (in the UK! :-))
We also need to buy a crimp tool - I assume that these are all much of a
muchness in quality etc..
Any help would be greatly appreciated, both by myself and by the company! :-)
Cheers,
Jonathan
... I'll get to it on the 2nd Tuesday of next week.
