If your system chokes on one line doing a file search, try having 6 lines do 
a search at the same time.  It matters.  Try 60 lines doing a search.  It 
matters even more.
Are you taking about a new since date/last log in, or a search using    f ive 
 key words, or what?
I've well over 40,000 files here, but not all are BBS listed, as I use the 
system for just about everything else as well, and do run a muti line to 
boot, all sharing one IRQ.  I don't know the total dir list size, as they are 
scattered across many paths, on many drives.  Each drive has 25,000 or so 
files according the chkdsk.
