Thunderbird, if so configured, interprets the following formatting characters: _Underline_ *Bold* /Italics/ Thunderbird also can draw emoticons like :-) as an actual graphic. If you want to do bold/italics/underline in a more portable way, use HTML formatting, but only for private e-mail and news servers, not mailing lists or USENET groups.
