        If you have an external unit, try setting S194=10 or S194=138
        (second turns on the "screen saver").  The %Q and %L values
        will be displayed.  
        If the %L is in the 18 to 30 range and the %Q is in the
        30 to 55 range, the modem is making the best connection 
        for it sees as the conditions.  If you want to make the modem
        more aggressive, you could try S191=125.
