Have you tried using bookmarks? It sounds like bookmarks would solve the
request below adequately. I mapped Alt-1, Alt-2, etc. to drop bookmarks,
and Ctrl-1, Ctrl-2, etc. to jump to bookmarks. So, the case below would be
Alt-1, then go to destination and do work, then Ctrl-1 to go back to the
origin.
As a bonus, if you use the whtspc macro, you can have the bookmark
indicators show up on the left window border edge.

I'd like that also, but I still want a separate retrace for the cursor --
without undoing any editing changes. (Both options, of course.) After I
have copied or moved a block, and then done some minor editing at the
destination, I'd like to go back to the source position, so I can start
there to find and mark the next block to be copied/moved.
