Election Results Around the Nation
New Jersey -- Governor Whitman squeaks by! McGreevey almost ousts
her in a 1% race. Pro-gun candidate Murray Sabrin takes 5% of the
vote. Republicans hold state Assembly and Senate, losing several
house seats, but maintaining the exact ratio in the Senate. GOA
will look more closely at the impact of this election in a follow up
report.
Virginia -- Gilmore wins Governor defeating Beyer: Gun owners
should prepare for assault on statewide pre-emption in the 1998
General Assembly. Hagar (R) wins Lt. Governor; he took a fairly
strong pro-gun position on our survey while L.F. Payne refused to
answer. Earley (R) wins Attorney General running as a stealth
anti-gun candidate. Democrats retain control of State House during
Republican sweep at top of ticket.
Washington State -- I-676 Defeated. 71% of the voters said no to
gun control.
Special Elections:
MI State Senate District 12 -- Pro-gun Dave Jaye wins primary! Gun
owners in Michigan carry him through to the general election!
PA State Senate District 10 -- Anti-gun Republican Conti wins.
Columbus, OH City Attorney -- State Senator Bruce Johnson goes down
in flames. His anti-gun maneuverings in the House and Senate,
exposed by GOA, do him in as the voters demand better.
South Carolina Specials -- In 6 out of 10 contested general election
races GOA survey results were mailed to gun owners, with mixed
results. 3 of the 6 pro-gun candidates we reported about were
elected: solid pro-gun House candidates Jennings McAbee (R-12) and
Bill Bowers (D-120) were elected, along with Larry Grooms in Senate
district 37. We are gaining ground!
Coming up:
Special Election Primary for Louisiana House District 5 -- Saturday,
November 15, 1997
School Board Member Judy Boykin has taken a 100% pro-gun
position on the GOA survey. Judy Boykin faces three other
candidates, one who is a pro-gun longshot and two who have
either waffled or refused to answer the GOA survey.
Special Election General for Michigan Senate District 12 -- Tuesday,
November 25, 1997
Pro-gun state Rep. Dave Jaye will be vying for this open seat
against a Democrat and a Libertarian. Stand by for updates.
Special Election Primary for Virginia State Senate District 14 --
Dates TBA by Governor
Del. Randy Forbes, Chairman of the Virginia Republican Party,
who has voted for gun bans and gun rationing is reported to be
the front-runner for the soon-to-be open seat of anti-gun state
Sen. Mark Earley who was elected Attorney General of Virginia.
