subject: Network connection trouble

Dear Gert

GA> I need some help to getting a Mandrake Linux 9.1
GA> to connect to my Windows Network.

Once you (as root) have edited the /etc/samba/smb.conf
and change the WORKGROUP to be what you want. You might
want to goto to http://www.rpmfind.net and get:- komba2
for Mandrake. It gives you a very easy way of logging
on to Windows (or Linux) machines on your network and
mount the PUBLIC share area on your Mandrake machine.
Once mounted you can then browse via any file manager.

When you have finished transefering files, you can then
very easy un-mount the remote machine from a Right click
back in Komba2 (it is best to only mount and then unmount
a romote share when you are not using it as like most
things it takes up resources (ram) to have a remote
share permantly mounted. This is what Komba2 is good at.

NB. Untill you have got Samba sharing going using the
samba-client (to see other machines) Komba2 is useless,
(samba-server lets other machines see your Linux box)

All the best yours John

PS. I have made a /home/samba/public directory for
all other machines to share on my mandrake box. I
did have troubles with remote machines or Local user
often not being able to access or write to it. I did
two things
(1) in the /etc/samba/smb.conf
(a) I edited the [public] section to reflect the path
(use what ever path (directory) you want to use)
(c) I changed " write = no " to " write = yes "

(2) to enable everyone remote or local to use it,
as root, I did:- chmod 777 /home/samba/public

NOTE:- this is my local network and there is only me
using it - if you have lots of users you might not
want to use " 777 " as this gives everybody the ability
to read, write, delete etc. I cant rember the best XXX
to use ? Ask around and another Linux Geek will know ?
