Let's not forget that much of the exploration that led to the
European 'discovery' of North and South America was funded
and supported by women---Isabella of Spain, and Elizabeth I of
England. Much of the Russian exploration of the Pacific Coast
of North America was organized and promoted by the Empress Catherine
of Russia.
To say that women were powerless in the Tudor era is just as wrong as
saying they played no part in the European voyages of discovery.
