More likely the reason was to get the music over with faster so they could cram
in another commercial or two.  A station in Omaha used to do this - and even
with my 'tin ear' I could tell the music wasn't quite right (pitch was too high).
There was another station that once claimed it played 30 songs in an hour; do
the math, at 2+ minutes per song it ain't possible - unless you speed up the
turntables to shorten the playing time.
