I thought I would post this information so it might help others with the same
problem:
We have around 60 Novell 4.11 servers.. 12 of which, are remotely mirrored
using Vinca.
At several of our sites, we started having server crashes (all at once -
several at a time). Even the Vinca backup servers when booting crashed after
3-5 minutes.
Turned out, the local NDS database became corrupted. Brought the server up
via SERVER -NDB, and then loaded DSREPAIR, ran the local database repair, and
then downed the server again, brought it up normal, and ran the unattended
DSREPAIR. It found loads of errors, and fixed them. No problems since...
What seems to have caused it, was a master read/write replica we had that was
down for over a day at the top of our NDS tree. We turned the MASTER status
off on it, and so far so good.. No more crashes or NDS problems - SO FAR
anyway..
We have one MASTER and (3) read/writes at each location through the WAN.
They all get their master data from one central server (with has (3)
read-writes, once which had been down over a day).
Hope that all made sense..
