subject: New cam

It all started a couple weeks ago with a ticking eminating from a valve
cover. Oh says I, I'll just adjust the valves and be done with it, I've
always had a slight tick just never got around to doing anything about it.

That lasted all of an hour of mixed driving...
Bad lifters seemed to be the conclusion of the day. So, time for some more
 intense r&r.
So, with the weather being nasty, I wasn't about to do anything involved in
the driveway, so my mechanic gets the job. Not knowing what this engine came
with, I left it up to the experts... You'd think I know better by now hunh?

They come back with a Speed Pro (Sealed Power/TRW/Federal Mogul/etc.) CS179R
.447" lift, 222* duration {at}.050" (290* adv). Seemed alright at
the time. Got
to be better than something with a couple wiped lobes, and coupled with not
knowing what was in the engine, basis for comparison was limited at best.

Out with the old, in with the new. A couple wiped lobes, and two lifters that
are very concave. Almost 1/8" deep. (not quite 1/8").

In conclusion, my window rattler is no more. This cam has a stock idle quality

Lobe separation is 110 on the intake, and 118 on the exhaust (no wonder it
idles like a stocker). I always suspected my wiped cam had around 108* lobe
separation, now I'm sure of it. Hindsight right?

Having done some digging, the cam I have is a stock replacement for the
L-79 350horse 327cid motor. While it may still hit 300 ponies in a 350, the
power band is now up a couple thousand rpm from where I had it. Once rpms
build (I'm glad I don't have a stock stall converter any more!) she hauls
and sounds nice. But I do miss the window rattler... F'ing hindsight. =-)

At least emmisions testing is not an issue anymore.

 Alex.

... I drempt I was a muffler and woke up exhausted!
