Yet, you can use the SDcard to hold only the /boot partition with the
kernel and firmware etc and boot to a root partition on a USB attached
device. You simply specify the relevant root partition in the cmdline.txt
file.

Once set up I make the SDcard  /boot partition readonly to prevent any
corruption of the SDcard.
