Subject: RE: [drakelist] MN-4 on 6 mtrs
I know it's common place to use tuners on HF these days. They certainly come
in handy for matching antennas cut for other frequency ranges than the one
that may be desired at the present. For example, transmitting on the low end
of 80 meters when your dipole was cut for the high end of 75 meters. There
is also the G5RV antenna which works pretty well on HF but even better with
a tuner. But using tuners on VHF, even 6 meters is not a good idea. You can
get away with coax losses on HF but at VHF they become significant. Yes, I
know there is a company or maybe two selling "6 meter tuners" but they're a
bad idea. They do make some Mighty Fine Junk if you don't have high
expectations. Six meter antennas are not very large. Many people can at
least put up a 3 element yagi that works over the whole SSB phone band and
then some. Add some good RG-8 type coax (or whatever they're called now) and
you've got a viable antenna system. That would be my minimum antenna system
for 6, especially since you've got a fine rig like the TR-6 to go with it.
You don't want to put the cheapest set of tires on a fine sports car. There
are other more significant problems with the components in the MN-4 which
are totally wrong for 6 meter work. The capacitors, the tapped coil, the
band switch, etc...You're talking major butchery here. Another thing to
consider is the wattmeter movement which is really the same basic type as
the W-4 and designed for HF. But you could probably put a WV-4 wattmeter in
there. But it's YOUR gear to do as you like.

I would like to put my MN-4 on 6 meters to mate with the TR-6. Has anyone
done it? Can it be done? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Tnx.......JR K7PUR
