The unique thing, is that the old analog formats, while troublesome with
some generations of tape (gooey tape shed syndrome, which is another
discussion totally), can be played, and the material recovered for
re-issue. The Digital formats though, if the deterioration of the media is
so great, that the error correction won't handle the scope of the errors,
the audio mutes, and you have NADA.  So, in the digital world, it's an all
or nothing deal.
