subject: Re: Peachtree & Quickbooks block Linux server use

From: Gary Britt

That's a good point. Microsoft makes accounting software. Microsoft
Office Accounting Express, they give away for free. Microsoft Office
Accounting Pro is competitively priced. They are clearly trying to gain
market share in that market arena, and once they gain enough the
competitors software might start having compatibility problems .

I've downloaded the free Microsoft Office Accounting Express, but I haven't
installed it. I'm concerned whether the thing is online based more than I
would be comfortable with. Just like Microsoft Money is so online based
that I uninstalled it rather than use it.

Maybe Rich can tell us if Microsoft Office Accounting Express uses .Net
technology, and whether it wants to store info or some info online with
Microsoft or if it will work fully functional on a machine where Microsoft
Office Accounting Express is completely blocked from accessing the
internet?
I'd also like to know what file formats the data can be exported to. The
product demo talks about importing formats (Peachtree isn't one of them but
quickbooks is). It will export to Excel spreadsheets and word for some
things, but NOT Word/Excel 2000 which is what I use and I'm not upgrading
just to use Microsoft Office Accounting Express. I thought the Office 2K
file formats were the same as the file formats in Office XP and Office
2003.
Is my memory on this incorrect?
