It's also pretty obvious from the article that the girl was selected
because she's female - her accomplishments ("Langberg conducted
chemical investigations, ran a mathematical simulation [which someone
else wrote], and also studied video footage from the ocean floor...")
pale beside those of the two boys ("developed an inexpensive but
powerful microscope that delivers a 1,000-fold improvement in
resolution over normal light microscopes." and " developed an
improved method for generating high-quality, three-dimensional
computer graphics..." something which is math-intensive and the
largely the domain of Cal-Tech graduates gone to Hollywood.)
