I don't think the limited playback DVDs failed for the reason you =
suggest. They were priced to compete with rentals not purchases.

Copy protection like macrovision survived the market just fine. I =
expect the same for HD content with one exception. There are early =
adopters that have HD displays or other components that support = component
or DVI w/o HDCP. This wasn't an issue with macrovision or at = least not
one I remember.

The problem is the industry is placing restrictions on content that I =
paid for. The prattle about piracy is just a Trojan horse to restrict a =
users rights to digital media and I suspect in a decade we'll see =
retention and layback limits will be the norm. The industry has tried it =
before with limited playback DVDs that no one wanted and which were a =
colossal flop. Now they are attempting that scheme again - ( hopefully =
with similar results )

I have no doubt the thinking is the same or similar to =
macrovision for analog output, don't let it be trivial to make perfect =
copies. Only it is more serious for digital output from which you could =
possibly make a perfect copy.

It's all the content providers. Folks responsible for the =
players or platforms have no vested interest in having any content = protected.
