I'm not running Vista right now, but if I remember correctly, it wasn't
searching everywhere on the drive, just certain places. (and it was *slow*
if not indexed.)

    Actually it's search, it doesn't find what I want, indexed or not.  99%
of
    the time I'm not looking for a text string, I'm looking for a file name,
    Search has a problem with that.
