Very interesting discussion, I wish I'd had the chance to join in sooner.
And now, I'll have to settle for a few parting shots before I head out to
the Rockies for a week.

I was just re-reading "Federation" by the Reeves-Stevenses about
a week ago, and there's a chapter where Zefram Cochrane is beamed aboard
the Enterprise. When the Ensign he beams up with explains it to him, he's
horrified to think that he is not the original him. Cochrane spends several
paragraphs wondering how human life had become so cheap before the Ensign
explains that it's "strictly transportation" and not duplication.

The whole sequence is only a couple pages long, but it did a nice job of
showing how someone would react to that scenario.
