   My point is that I am an expert user. I don't think even you would =
argue otherwise. Yet, despite that I use almost all defaults. I would =
describe this as appropriate for a typical user not a newbie, ordinary =
user, or other classification, simply typical user.

   Selecting more appropriate views for folders with pictures is a good =
thing. I was very happy when this was introduced in Windows XP as it =
shows me more what I want to see. As for displaying it the same as last =
time, this is the case unless you have chosen the option to not save = view
settings for each folder.

   Everyone gets informative error messages. Do you have specific =
examples where you believe a "newbie" does not? As for experts
not = liking the system to fix itself, as an expert I have to disagree. I
= want anything that can be fixed automatically to be fixed automatically.
=
 I want this logged and in some cases I might want a notification in the =
tray, of the type that you whined earlier that you don't like. If your =
personal preferences differ you can configure things your way on the =
systems you control. I can almost guarantee that what you think I want =
as an expert is not what I want.

  Well since you are perfectly happy with the newbie settings that it =
uses=20
  now, I would imagine one of the three choices would work for you.

  As for the NTLM logic, I wasn't talking about that specifically, I'm=20
  thinking more along the look and feel lines, wizards, admin tools, =
controls,=20
  folder defaults, automatic things like changing the folder view when =
it's=20
  pictures instead of honoring the system default for folders, etc. If I =
want=20
  to see thumbnails, I know how to do that, just display the folder the =
way I=20
  had it last time I viewed it and I'll be happy.

  For example, newbies like it when the system fixes itself, experts =
hate it=20
  when the system changes their settings but they like informative error =

  messages. That is the sort of thing I would like to see different =
based on=20
  the selection I mentioned. Newbies get wizards, experts get =
diagnostics,=20
  users get both.

     The problem especially with the "expert" option you suggest is that =

  experts differ. I would consider myself an expert user and your =
preferences=20
  are not my preferences.

     I disagree there is any meaningful difference between what you call =

  "newbies" and what you call "average users". I
especially do not =
believe=20
  you can make an intelligent distinction.

    Even as an expert, I prefer almost all UI settings to remain the =
default=20
  for several reasons. One is that the defaults are OK for me. The =
type of=20
  changes I make are to tighten security in ways that you might find=20
  objectionable such as disallowing auth except 128-bit NTLMv2 and =
Kerberos=20
  which prevents access from Windows NT 4.0 and other old versions of =
Windows.=20
  I also disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP which also prevents access from =
Windows=20
  NT 4.0 and other old versions of Windows. I tighten other security =
settings=20
  and enable settings that force buggy applications to be more likely to =

  crash. I've enabled these for years. I wouldn't have recommended =
disabling=20
  Windows NT 4.0 access to your default Windows 2000 user but it was =
fine for=20
  me. In fact I think all my changes are good for me which is why I =
make them=20
  but I do not have your ego to suggest that my preferences should be =
the=20
  default for others.
