"Moment of Darkness"
---Michael Gray

Ben sat atop the tall peak looking through the hazy air toward a sun he did
not know and now that he was here, he was certain he did not like either.

Not because it was brighter than the one that his homeworld circled, or
that it's color insulted his sense of beauty. Ben knew enough suns to fill
an encyclopedia. Usually he never gave a star a second thought.

But this one forced him to think. It forced him to suffer.

Ben took a deep breath of the moist air the planet was enveloped by.
Except for the polar regions the humidity of this world was one of the
highest he'd ever experienced. Soon, by geological standards, this world
would team with life.

That had been her dream.

That's why he was here now.

Cynthia had chosen this world for her project from the start. This was the
one she wanted over the more than hundred others the Committee had on their
list. But after she'd seen the first reports from the survey probes this
was "her" world.

Those were the happiest of times.

Now, Ben only had his loyalty to her and those memories to bring him here.

It was silly, he thought. Why was she so obsessed with this one? It never
made any sense to him.

Maybe in a few minutes it would. This was his last chance to see into her
mind again.

The shuttle explosion which claimed Cynthia and forty-five other
researchers from the project had nearly claimed Ben as well. It had taken
him five months to recover. He guessed three months of that were due to
him not wanting to go on.

He stood and looked into the bright sky, doing his best not to look
directly at the glowing yellow sun. He would have to take even greater care
soon.

The love of his life, his soulmate had so wanted to be here where he
stood--- when he stood. That experience had been denied her. It was left
to Ben to fish some sliver of joy out of the rage filled seas of his mind.

For it was only once every thousand years the two moons of this world
joined together for a double eclipse. Cynthia had done computer
simulations and was certain it would be a moment of beauty unrivalled by
any she had witnessed before.

For Ben, it would be the final reminder of the life and love he had forever lost.
