Hi Folks,

I just noticed that IDE DVD writers can be purchased locally for peanuts
(~NZ50, ~US$30), so I decided that its about time I upgraded my system
capabilities again by looking at installing a DVD writer. Currently I use a
Plextor SCSI CD Reader/Writer and that has worked flawlessly for me for 2-3 years
(I use CDRecord with Audio/Data Cd Creator S/W).

Now I am thinking that DVD writing could be useful, however things appear to be
not quite so straight forward with DVD's. First there is DVD+ and DVD- (which one
is most useful), then there are DVD+ & DVD- combined drives (do these work
well???), and some DVD writers with dual layers available. Finally what OS/2 S/W
do I need to "drive" all of these. The OS will be eCS 1.2.1 and I realise I will
need to use DANIS drivers to have the IDE DVD Writer emulate SCSI for CDRecord...

My HD's are all SCSI and I currently have 1 IDE CD Reader but that will
probably be retired because its no longer needed with the Plextor reading all
CD's fine.

One thing I learnt with CD is that writing at speeds higher than about 4x seems
to produce discs that some CD readers have trouble reading, so as long as I write
CD's at 4x or less, all is well.

Also, can all DVD Writers read CD realiably, IE can I replace a single CD
Writer with a Single DVD Writer and expect my CD's to read fine or do I need to
retain a separate CD reader. Similar, can a DVD writer also write CD's
(reliably)?

Any info appreciated, such as what combinations YOU have working, in particular
any web sites that you may have found that document all this would also be of
use.

Thanks..............pk.
