The good: It neatly brings the ill-fated Hawk full circle and allows the
opportunity to resuscitate him if such serves the author's (or anyone
else's) purpose.
The bad: Drabbles cannot afford wasted words, and there are a few here,
along with a certain lack of clarity in a sentence or two---the main
culprit being:
"At the far end [of what? a small room? A huge warehouse?
"Alcoves" doesn't tell me much.] stood three cryogenic tubes.
Frozen within were the bodies of three -things-, once intelligent beings
now turned into something else, inhuman and cybernetic--Borg." [This
last sentence could be pared down for greater impact.]
The ugly: The last sentence seems a little desultory: A denouement is
hardly necessary in a one hundred word piece. Announcing it was Hawk should
have ended the drabble; since serious Trekkies are the only people who'd
recognize him anyway, Shelby's final comment is superfluous and robs the
drabble of both snap and dramatic impact.
The good again: I thought the use of Shelby extremely relevant and clever,
considering her status during "The Best of Both Worlds." Overall,
the writing is sharp.
Three stars out of four.
