These was exactly what destroyed it for me.  Can we wave it a little harder
guys?  Up to that point the story was working.

Likewise.  Miri I leave alone, just drop the Plot Orphan.  It affects the
story not in the least.  Omega Glory can be saved by ditching the pitiful
flag waving, and having Kirk defeat the bad guy in trial by combat.  He
then explains the Federation way of Strength in Mercy.
 Bread and Circuses I will treat as a Preserver transplant.  However if
one does not wish that, it is easy enough top explain as a similar culture
to Rome with no connections.  Just assume the gods and symbols are
different.
