Lisa is partly right though. Ritalin IS an amphetamine. On patients with ADHD
it has paradoxal calming effect. If I were to take it, I would feel as if
I had too much coffee to drink. It speeds up the Central Nervous System.
Increasing blood pressure, pulse, heart rate and respirations. That comes
from the PDR.
Now about media, yes there is a gross amount of misinfromation out there
about Ritalin and ADHD. If you look across the board the same goes for
anything that has to do with mental health. While I have stated before
ADHD is a neurological disorder, that is not how it is viewed in our society.
Look at all of the lables placed on anyone who has a mental health disorder.
Persons with depression are considered just plane lazy. When is society going
to realize, that no one is perfect or
"normal" and start treating human beings as human beings? Those who lash
out and make fun of others are most likely the first who have real mental
health deficits. I say if Ritalin works for ADHD...lets just accept it.
Would anyone make fun of a diabetic who has to take insulin? Why don't
we tell them its all in your head you are just looking for attention.
Thats becuase there are laboratory tests and data to show the high
blood sugar, for someone with asthma, there are stethoscopes to listen
to the lungs and hear the difficulty with the exchange of oxygen or blood
tests to test the amount of O2 in the blood stream.
Our systems are all connected the body and mind. Perhpas one day they
will discover, tests to diagnose ADHD, only then can we hope for exceptance
from a very judgemental society.
