Amen to that, brother Garry. In my mind the transporter has always been a
piece of Trek "magic" used as a storytelling device to avoid the
drudgery of shuttle transport. And when something is essentially magic,
the least said the better. Let it operate as the device it is--- not
become part of the story. Do people of today talk about the inner workings
of the cross-town bus they ride? Hell no. You get on the damn thing and
take it across town. Trek should take the same attitude toward the
transporter.

Exactly. Just because it's science fiction, or Trek, doesn't mean the
characters can be stupid just so the writer can feature some neato,
whiz-bang "tech" thing.
I would consider doing a story about my concerns in earlier posts about
this "copying" thing, but frankly I don't think it would leave
the Trek universe intact, so there's not much point in it.
The transporter is the Trek equivalent of a bus or plane and the more it
remains so, the better.
