Under the ISO standard, there is no portable way. From memory, it specifies
a maximum 'object size' of something like 32K.

On most systems, however, you just allocate it. all of the far* functions
are 16-bit compiler only, because that's the only place they're needed
(that and huge, far pointers and other such rubbish).

operator new is certainly described in the draft ANSI C++ standard - it is
an integral part of the C++ langauge.
