Well, you mentioned that her liver and kidneys had shut down.  I'm sure
her kidneys had been inflamed for a long time, and the medications are
broken down by the liver or kidneys.  Sometimes the doctors walk a fine
line when they feel they have no choice but to give a medication which
they know could in itself do damage to the patient.
