According to who? Where are the "rules of unix/linux" stated?
/usr is where I
put system-wide programs. Since I'm only testing, I'm doing it in my home
directory. What "law of linux" did I break there?

I have no link time errors, and everything built the way it should after fixing
some bugs in the Makefiles (which had nothing to do with where I installed,
either).
